What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is seen increasingly as an effective intervention for improving the lives of older people in the UK. Research is confirming the benefits of Music Therapy for people suffering from dementia. It is wonderful to see the growth in therapeutic choir projects and in the growth of the playlist movement that both widen access to linking music and memory in this population. I can signpost clients and their carers to these opportunities.

My particular area of specialism in working with older people is in providing individual psychological support through the musical relationship for individuals living with the effects of isolation, dementia, aphasia and other post-stroke complications, terminal illness, bereavement, depression, and end of life care.

I can offer sessions in a client's home, or within their care environment (with permission). Sessions can include relatives, carers and other patients surrounding the client. Older Clients may also benefit from receiving their therapy through the frame of therapeutic teaching, as this can feel less stigmatising to them than the idea of receiving therapy.

I believe that Music Therapy can offer older clients an invaluable space in which their true self and inner vitality can be shared regardless of disability, mental or physical illness. In my experience, this promotes noticeable improvements in wellbeing and communication in both the client and those who support them.
